More on the economy...

The new economy server mod can be quite confusing.  Let me give you some more details.

Going Crazy!
First off, don't go crazy and strip our world of items down to the bedrock just to get stuff to sell to get money.  To strip the world to accumulate money will only wreck our server.  The #1 thing on the server should be to keep our world looking awesome!  Do things with style!  Always keep that in mind when building and mining.

Why do we need money in Minecraft?
Well, you really don't.  There is nothing you can buy that you can't go out and get yourself.  However, adding an economy to MC adds just another dimension of fun for us.

Money can be used to buy a ton of a certain kind of block we need to build that great building we are thinking about.  Ya, you can go out and hunt down 10,000 sheep to get wool.  Instead, go to the shop and see how much they have in stock!  Maybe someone just sold a ton.

Also, money can be used to pay for stuff in trade.  Say you are down in a mine and you run out of torches (like Grant always does.)  Now, you can charge him 500 Plats for the 64 extra torches you have on you!  What if your last iron pick is about to wear out and you are DEEP underground.  You don't want to go to a shop to get another one.  Your mining buddy has one, so you buy one off of him.  What if you want to hire yourself out to help someone build their massive new project.  Charge them 1000 Plats for helping them clear that massive plot of land or to finish that roof.  See?  The possibilities are endless!

Shops

  • You can only buy and sell in a shop.
  • Shops can only be setup by someone with the commands to create shops.  Right now that is only me.  I will add everyone in the short future.  There doesn't need to be shops everywhere though as you will see, so keep reading.
  • The only shop we have right now is on the beach straight across from where you first spawned in the new jungle area.
  • Players do not own shops.  No one owns shops actually.
  • The inventory in shops is accessible from every shop.  In other words, there is one inventory.  It is global. It is not different at each shop.  (I'm not sure that this is true since we only have one shop.  We need to verify this.  Each shop might have its own inventory.)
  • Prices in shops are the same in all shops.
  • So, we only need 1 or 2 shops in each city area that will be convenient for everyone.
  • The inventory for each item in the shop very low.  The way the shop gets more stuff is by you selling your stuff to the shop.  Then, your stuff shows up in the shop and is available to be purchased by everyone.

Currency
  • Our currency is in Plats and Zeds instead of Dollars and Cents.  So, $10.50 is 10 Plats and 50 Zeds.

Prices

  • The prices of stuff are pre-set by the economy mod.  At first, prices will be a set price based on the rarity of the item.  Expect gold to cost you more and get you more than say, wood.
  • Once the stock of an item in the shop gets to a certain level set in the economy mod, then the price will automatically fluctuate.  For instance, right now there is 0 cobblestone in the shop.  At the start, the economy mod sets a fixed sell to you cost of 2 Plats.  When you sell cobblestone to the shop, you get 1 Plat.  Notice, at the start, everything to BUY costs you twice as much as you get when you SELL.  I'm not sure, but I think it stays at a 2:1 ratio always.  Cobblestone has a "median" set to 25,000.  This means that until the stock of Cobblestone reaches more than 25,000, the price will stay at 2 Plats.  Once the stock of cobblestone reaches over 25,000, the price starts dropping.  For instance, now the price is at 2 Plats to buy 1 cobblestone.  If the stock reaches 25,250, then the price to buy cobblestone might drop to 1.79 Plats or something like that.  I don't know the exact formula.  Also, when the stock gets over the median setting of the item, then the money you get from selling to the shop also drops.
  • The median points of several common items just for comparison:
    • Dirt 5,000
    • Iron ore 500
    • Lapis ore 250
    • Diamond ore 50
    • And so on

Sales Tax
  • Sales tax is charged on every purchase!  Right now it is set at 10%.  That means if you want to buy something for 10 Plats, it will really cost you 11 Plats.

How to Sell Stuff
  • Firstly, you have to have stuff to sell.
  • Secondly, you have to be in a shop.  Any shop will do!
  • To get a list of shops, type /listshops
  • Once you are in a shop, put the item in your hand that you wish to sell.  Be careful, you might sell something you didn't want to sell!
  • With the item you wish to sell in your hand, type /ii.  This is the item info command.  Once typed, it will list out on your screen information about the item.  You are looking for the Item Name.
  • Once you know the item name, you can issue the sell command.
  • To sell an item in your inventory type /sell itemname amount.  The item doesn't have to be in your hand.  It can just be in your inventory.  If you leave the amount off of the command, then it only sells 1.  If you type in "max" then it sells all of that item you have.  So, if you go mining and have tons of coal and you want to sell it all, don't count it.  Just type /sell coal max.  You will then be given money for your coal!  The amount of coal then goes into the shop inventory and becomes available to purchase by other players.

How to Buy Stuff
  • Need a new spiffy Diamond Sword, but are short 1 Diamond to make your own?  Go buy a Diamond from a shop - that is if there is any in stock.
  • Go to a shop and check the inventory for the item you need.  There is no way, that I'm aware of, of easily knowing how much of an item is in stock at a store.  Type /topitems to list the stock of the top items in a shop.  If there are multiple pages, type /topitems page# to access that page.  If all else fails, just try to purchase the item.  If there is none in stock, it will tell you.
  • If you don't know the item name of the item you want to buy, but you have at least one of the items you want to buy, hold it in your hand and issue the /hb amount command.  This will buy an amount of the item you are holding.
  • Once you know the item name of the item you want to buy, issue the buy command.  Type /buy item amount.  The money will automatically be taken from you and given to the shop and you will get your items!

Enchantments
  • I guess you can buy individual enchantments.  I don't understand this yet, so check back here later.

If you need more help...
Tons of commands can be found here!
Note, you will not have access to all commands.

  1. Think of it like recycling. Person A just sold 100 dirt he didn't need. Instead of going and stripping you own dirt and leaving a mark, go buy person A's dirt he just sold and use/reuse it.
